16 people met on January 28th to take the next step in making Wilsonville a diverse, inclusive, and equitable place!
Here’s what we accomplished:
Grounded our understanding of Wilsonville’s history by reading a land acknowledgment.
Viewed and reflected upon Amanda Groman’s "The Hill We Climb."
Discussed how we can help promote the Intelligent Lives movie and discussion on February 25th at 7pm. You can register here. Help spread the news on social media by sharing our event page!
Received updates about the WAIC-led police oversight committee, equity and outreach team, and Undoing Racism workshop. All of these are still in planning. If you are interested, please contact us through our 2021 activities page.
Human dignity and diversity celebration
Our central topic of discussion was the development of a human dignity and celebration calendar that highlights diverse holidays, history, and stories. We talked about how to move beyond face-level multiculturalism and have this lead to deeper understanding and connection. Here’s what we heard:
Focus on one holiday each month, connect it to Wilsonville and the community, share stories, promote awareness, possibly host events in the future
Celebrate commonalities
Connecting to the community, sharing stories, using community members as resources so everyone feels seen and heard, and valued
Find commonalities to build bridges - things that build commonality (stories, food, a celebration of seasons, etc.)
Andrew Engel and Kate Greenfield volunteered to help coordinate this effort. If you are interested in connecting with them, email us today!
If you have any questions or cannot make the meeting, please email us and we would love to connect.
