Ruby Bridges Walk to School 11/14

Walk to School on November 14 in Remembrance of Ruby Bridges!

On Monday, November 14th, Wilsonville schools will be participating in the Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day. The intention of this day is for our students to learn more about the bravery and historic actions of Ruby Bridges, along with reflecting on what they might like to change about the world and what it means to be an activist.

You can learn more about Ruby Bridges’ experience by watching this short video on YouTube.

On this day, classes will individually be taking time to walk around the exterior of our school and then enter through our front doors. This symbolic walk will support student's reflection on the actions and bravery of Ruby Bridges and will allow all students to participate. Families are welcome to join their child’s class for this walk and talk with students.

To show our unity in making the world a better place, one step at a time, each child will be given a purple bracelet and encouraged to wear any purple they have. If you are not able to join us, I encourage you to talk with your child about Ruby Bridges and their experience. Great questions to ask are:

  • What is your idea of a hero? Do you know any heroes?

  • Is there anything you would want to change in the world? What is it?

  •  Can you think of small steps or small changes that you can make to get closer to that change? Are there ways to help others learn how to make small changes?

With a cold and clear forecast for next Monday, please make sure your child dresses appropriately. This is good to do each day throughout these months, but will also support them on this day during their additional walk.

Bicycle donation

On a different note, If you would like a gently used, rebuilt bicycle for your child, please email Carmen Ryan at ryanc@wlwv.k12.or.us or call 503.673.7704. We have been fortunate to be placed into contact with a member of our community who is looking to share many rebuilt bikes through our Family Empowerment Center.
